  • Front Door Person Needed

Ok so you don’t have to be this hard core

but you get the idea. Recently the position of Dr. Sketchy’s Front Door badass has opened up.

Our old Front Door Badass left the country after completing her studies.

(Best wishes Yonela, we miss you already!)
It’s a paid position but if you are in a position to volunteer you’d be totally helping us out as we’re non-profit, starving artists who lack budget and all the other whiney accoutrements that go along with running any kind of artistic endevour. The biggest perk is the power trip and the free drink you get. Long story short we need a responsible individual who can sit at the front door and collect the entry fee, give out the drink tickets, keep the model happy and generally help out on the night of Dr. Sketchy’s. It’s extremely part-time as you only have to work for 4 hours once a month but it’s a great way to meet new people.

  • Model Attacked – Dr. Sketchy’s Portland, Maine

Distressing news from one of our own.

This just in from Katie “Megaphone” Diamond, Dr. Sketchy’s event coordinator in Portland, Maine.

    “Hi Molly,

We’ve had a pretty upsetting event happen this past weekend here in Portland–my September model was attacked. Two men approached him around midnight on Friday, and started saying homophobic slurs to him, and then proceeded to beat him enough to concuss him and cause bleeding of the brain. You can read more about it here: http://news.mainetoday.com/updates/032723.html

This is, of course, very scary and outrageous. Already, local Portland queers and artists alike have rallied around what happened, and are doing their best to organize and educate, and the police are searching for the attackers.

A close friend of our model has created a website — healportland.com — to let people know about our model’s status, donate money (since he has no healthcare), and leave well-wishing messages. I was wondering if it would be possible to send this out to the Sketchy’s list, so we could, at minimum, let our art community know what has happened.

    Thanks,
    Katie”
As event coordinator for Dr. Sketchy’s Tokyo I strongly urge all members to help in anyway you can. Dr. Sketchy’s is about art, love and self-expression. It’s time to stop the violence and increase the peace! Dr. Sketchy’s Tokyo is completely with you Portland.

    Sketchers meet Safi

Safi is a seasoned and well known belly dancer in Japan. From Cairo to Tokyo to San Francisco these hips were made for moving. This 11 year veteran of the dance best known for it’s mesmerizing hip shimmy will grace The Dr. Sketchy’s stage this month as she transforms that shimmy into a truly hypnotic (pun very intended) burlesque performance sure to leave your sketchpads smoldering. Safi began performing burlesque in earnest in early 2007 and has since toured Japan leaving a wake of drooling patrons in her path. For more information about her Sketchy performance this month go here.

  • Hostess with the Mostest

In the July session, our Dr. Sketchy’s stage was graced by the illustrious, the salacious and the utterly curvaceous CHERRY TYPHOON. Her sinfully playful costumes and enticing gyrations gave our sketchers more inspiration than they could shake a stick at and since then the requests have been pouring in to have her do an encore performance. So back by popular demand Cherry Typhoon with chameleon-like agility has graciously accepted an invitation to become the new Co-Host of Dr. Sketchy’s, Tokyo. With Cherry on board Dr. Sketchy’s has officially gone BI-LINGUAL! So if you’ve got Japanese friends who have always wanted to come but overwhelmed at the prospect of a night completely in English tell them never fear for Cherry is here!

FYI: The next session will be September 24th at The Pink Cow.

  • Nipped Tucked and back in ACTION!

Our old site had a little “work” done this summer and is now back with more user friendly features which include up to the minute updates on Facebook, information in Japanese on Mixi, a new FAQ section for all you newbies out there, an awesome new Sketchy design team and more artastic fun than you can shake a stick at! We kick off our Fall season with Safi, a veteran of the belly dancing world and absolute sensation of the underground Burlesque scene here in Japan. More details to come! Our new staff is dedicated to bringing forth edgier themes, outrageous contests and scouting hot professional burlesque talent from every corner of Tokyo. So whether this is your first time holding a sketch pad or your work is on display at the top of Roppongi Hills there is sure to be a little Sketchtastic excitement for everyone!

  • Sketchy Artist Josh McKible in the Shibuya Spotlight

Josh MCKIBILLO‘ McKible is a long time participant of Dr. Sketchy’s Tokyo.

Earlier this year he designed this poster for Dr. Sketchy’s own Cherry Typhoon.

This week we are celebrating the launch of a piece from his Nani Bird series, which has been selected to be displayed at the Shibuya Station ticket gate. The exhibition is being covered by Dazed & Confused Magazine in Japan and in the UK as well as on-line at dazeddigital and PingMag.

The exhibition is well worth venturing into the Shibuya jungle for but if you can’t make it you can check out all things McKibillo on show here.
